I was fortunate enough to get a new part-time job that I really wanted this semester: acting for the Law School. What you might ask , does the Law School need an actress for?

Under the supervision of their professors, law students begin to accept cases while still at school. Their lack of experience dealing with law procedures and clients (客户) makes many of them anxious. So in order to prepare them for the real work environment, they need simulations (模拟).

In one case, my job is to play a 16-year-old girl from a troubled family. My mum is on drugs. My dad was locked up in prison a long time ago. My sister is trying to raise her two kids. And finally, my brother just got arrested.

Government social workers want to take me away from my family and put me into state custody (监护). They are now charging my mum with child neglect. But I do not want to leave home, despite what others think of my family.

So in the first simulation, I met my lawyers, who are in fact still law students. I was supposed to play this really tough character. At the beginning, it was hard. I kept being too polite, especially when my poor lawyers looked nervous and lost.

But after a while, I ignored the helpless looks from my lawyers, I started to challenge them with my bad temper, distrust, and disregard for the legal process.

After the simulation, the professor asked me to discuss the students' performance with them. I gave them some advice, and they all commented on how good an actress I was. They were pretty scared by me!

This was a wonderful experience. I love acting. Unlike theatre work, it doesn't take up too much time. I don't have to remember lines or go to rehearsals (排演). I am given freedom to define my character and interact with other participants any way I want to. 56. What does the second paragraph mainly deal with? A. Why does the law school need an actress? B. What does an actress do?

C. Why do the law students lack experience? D. How do they train law students? 57. Which of the following is true of the author?

A. She has a troubled family. B. She is a college student.

C. Her mother is a drug addict. D. She is an actress in a theater. 58. The underlined word \"charging\" here means _____.

A. rushing forward B. asking as a price

C. putting a charge into D. accusing sb of sth in a court of law 59. The law students were ____ my performance.

A. anxious about B. satisfied with C. worried about D. disappointed at

One of Britain's few unique contributions to world culture may be ruined, according to a survey that suggests holiday postcards are being emailed into disappearance. More than half of the 1,000 holiday-makers interviewed said they had decided to send fewer cards, turning instead to their electronic rivals. A quarter of the respondents gave up postcards as old-fashioned and slow to arrive. A further 14% admitted that thinking of something to fill the space was too challenging, compared with a call home.

Although officially invented by a Hungarian, Emanuel Hemnann, in 1869, the idea of illustrated cards was taken up with most interest in Victorian Britain, joining Gothic architecture and scenery gardening as fields which the country was famous for. \"If the British postcard did die out, we would lose for ever something of great importance of the nation,\" said Chris Mottershead of Thomason Holidays, which made the research. He was backed by Marie Angelou of Sussex University, who has studied the importance of sending and receiving postcards. \"Postcards are nothing like phone calls, instant testing and direct photo shots via the mobile,\" she said. \"All these are useful, practical devices, but postcards offer something additional that is unusual and simply practical, but imaginative and personal. They can remind the real atmosphere of your holiday in a way that nothing else can do. They're also for more than a moment--with some people adding them to collections built up over years and years. Postcards-collecting, or deltiology, is third only to coins and stamps in Britain's allied tradition of collecting things. \"The country's uniquely postcard-related achievements include the invention in 1902 of the \"divided back\".

60. The main topic discussed in the passage is ______. A. postcards are more useful than e-mails

B. it is a pity that postcards may be replaced by electronic devices C. electronic devices are more convenient

D. the postcard is a special contribution to the world culture

61. The advantages of postcards include the following except _____. A. slow to arrive B. providing real holiday atmosphere C. for collections D. presenting unique character

62. The underlined part \"to fill the space was too challenging\" probably has the same meaning as _______.

A. it was fairly easy to fill the space on the postcards

B. it was bothersome to write some words to fill the postcards C. it was tiring to fill the room on the postcards D. to write on the postcards was too hard a task

63. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? A. Britain has the most beautiful countryside in the world. B. The postcard was invented in Victorian, Britain.

C. Britain made the invention of the \"divided back\" postcard. D. Sending email is not interesting at all.

Millions of stars are traveling about in space. A few form groups which journey together, but most of them travel alone.

And they travel through a universe so large that one star seldom comes near to

第 4页 共 9页

another. For the most part each star makes its journey in complete loneliness, like a ship on an empty ocean. The ship wilt be well over a million miles from its nearest neighbor. From this it is easy to understand why a star seldom finds another anywhere near it.

We believe, however, that some two thousand million years ago, another star wandering through space, happened to come near our sun. Just as the sun and the moon raise tides (潮汐) on the earth, so this star must have raised tides on the surface of the sun. But they were very different from the small tides that are raised in our oceans; a large tidal wave must have traveled over the surface of the sun, at last forming a mountain so high that we cannot imagine it. As the cause of the disturbance came nearer, so the mountain rose higher and higher. And before the star began to move away again, its tidal pull had become so powerful that this mountain was torn to pieces and threw off small parts of itself into space. These small pieces have been going round the sun ever since. They are the planets.

64. Some two thousand million years ago, the mountain on the sun was raised probably because _____.

A. a large tidal wave of a star traveled over the surface of the sun B. another star happened to come near the sun C. the sun and the moon raised the tides on the earth D. the star moved away from the sun 65. The article suggests that _____.

A. our earth exists before the sun B. how space formed C. no one knows where the earth comes from

D. our earth used to be one part of a high mountain on the sun 66. The expression \"the cause of the disturbance\" refers to _____. A. the large tidal wave B. the powerful tidal pull

C. the star coming near the sun D. one of the sun's planets 67. In this article, the writer mainly wants to tell the readers ______. A. that the universe is so large that we cannot imagine it B. how the high mountains were formed on the sun

C. why the tides over the surface of the sun were so powerful D. where the planets in the universe came from

In their struggle to deal with an attack of desert locusts, Cypriot farmers may do well to turn to a U. N site that suggested that if you can't beat them eat them. Locusts (蝗虫) are rich in protein and can be stir-fried, boiled or roasted. It is a piece of valuable information provided by the Rome-based Food and Agriculture Organization in a drive to help deal with locusts that have landed in Cyprus from Africa. \"Here are a few local recipes (食谱) from locust-allotted countries, a page on the FAO Web site says. Please send us yours. One recipe from a tribe in southern Africa advises making roast locust into a fine powder to eat on a journey. \"The legs, when fried, are especially relished for their pleasant taste.\" \"Take several dozen adults, especially females, cut the stomach lengthwise and put a peanut inside,\" a Cambodian recipe suggested. \"Then lightly cook the locusts in a hot frying pan, adding a little oil and salt to taste. Be careful not to overcook or burn them. \"Eating locusts has been documented from Biblical times. According to the Christian New

Testament, John the Baptist survived on locusts and honey when he was in the desert--even though some question whether it was locusts that he actually ate as the Greek name \"acaridae\" can also mean the tips of plants. The locusts reached eastern Mediterranean countries in early November after the worst attack recorded in Africa for more than a decade.

68. Where can you find ways of cooking locusts according to the passage? A. Locust-affected countries. B. a U.N. site. C. Africa. D. an African web site.

69. Which of the following is the place where people eat locusts with peanuts? A. a tribe in Southern Africa. B. Cambodian. C. Cyprus. D. Rome. 70. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A. Some people doubt that John the Baptist really ate locusts as recorded in the Bible. B. It was the most serious attack by locusts in Africa since ten years ago. C. Fried locust legs are the most delicious dish in the world. D. People in Africa didn't know how to eat locusts before. 71. The best title of the passage probably is _____.

A. Locusts are delicious B. It's more effective to beat them than to eat them

C. What a clever way to eat locusts D. If you can't beat them, eat them

At one time, computers were expected largely to remove the need for paper copies of documents because they could be stored electronically. But for all the texts that are written, stored and sent electronically, a lot of them ate still ending up on paper.

It is difficult to measure the quantity of paper used as a result of use of Internet-connected computers, although just about anyone who works in an office can tell you that when e-mail is introduced, the printers start working overtime. \"I feel in my bones this revolution is causing more trees to be cut down,\" says Ted Smith of the Earth Village Organization.

Perhaps the best sign of how computer and Internet use pushes up demand for paper comes from the high-tech industry itself, which sees printing as one of its most promising new markets. Several Internet companies have been set up to help small businesses print quality documents from a computer. Earlier this week Hewlett-Packard Co. announced a plan to develop new technologies that will enable people to print even more so they can get a hard copy of a business document, a medical record or just a one-line email, even if they nowhere near a computer. As the company sees it, the more use of the Internet the greater demand for printers.

Does all this mean environmental concerns have been forgotten? Some activists suggest people have been led o believe that a lot of dangers to the environment have gone away. \"I guess people believe that the problem is taken care of, because of recycling,\" said Kelly Quirke, director of the Rainforest Action Network in San Francisco. Yet Quirke is hopeful that high-tech may also prove helpful. He says printers that print on both sides are growing in popularity. The action group has also found acceptable paper made from materials other than wood, such as agricultural waste.

72. The growing demand for paper in recent years is largely due to _____.

第 6页 共 9页

A. the rapid development of small business B. the opening up of new markets C. the printing of high quality copies D. the increased use of the Internet

73. Environmentalists believe one possible way of dealing with the paper situation is _____.

A. to encourage printing more quality documents B. to develop new printers using recycled paper

C. to find new materials for making paper D. to plant more fast growing trees 74. Hewlett-Packard Co. has decided to develop new technologies because ______. A. people are concerned about the environment B. printers in many offices are working over time

C. small companies need more hard copies D. they see a growing market for printers

75. What would be the best title for the text?

A. Computers and Printers. B. E-mail and the Business World.

C. internet Revolution and Environment. D. Modern Technology and New Markets.

Since many of you are planning to study at a college or university in this country, you may be curious to know what you usually do in a typical week, bow you can get along with your fellow students, and so on. These are the questions I want to discuss with you today. First, let's talk about what your weekly schedule will look like. No matter what your major may be, you can expect to spend between four and six hours a week for each class attending lectures. Lectures are usually in very large rooms because some courses such as introduction to sociology or economics often have as many as two or three hundred students, especially at large universities. In lectures, it's very important for you to take notes on what the professor says because the information in a lecture is often different from the information in your textbooks. Also, you can expect to have exam questions based on the lectures. So it isn't enough to just read your textbooks; you have to attend lectures as well. In a typical week you will also have a couple of hours of discussion for every class you take. The discussion section is a small group meeting usually with fewer than thirty students where you can ask questions about the lectures, the reading, and the homework. In large universities, graduate students, called teaching assistants, usually direct discussion sections.

If your major is chemistry, or physics, or another science, you'll also have to spend several hours a week in the lab, or laboratory, doing experiments. This means that science majors spend more time in the classroom than non-science majors do. On the other hand, people who major in subjects like literature or history usually have to read and write more than science majors do.

One possible version: Dear editor,

I think it is good to send teenagers abroad for further study.

Compared with China’s education, foreign education has many advantages.

It has a good education sense. It pays more attention to the training of students’ abilities and creates relaxing self-study circumstances for US.

In the schools, we don’t have to bear a heavy learning load as we do in China, and therefore we can learn much and better.

第 8页 共 9页

In foreign countries, we have more chances to learn about foreign culture, customs and habits, which can broaden our mind

Though we have to look after ourselves abroad and maybe life is hard for us, it will help us train our ability to live independently and deal with problems.

Yours sincerely

Li Hua
