Utopia is a perfect place. It is a place without war, hunger, poverty, or crime. It is a place where the people work together and share. There is no money in Utopia because the people do not need money . They do not have personal possessions because everything belongs to everyone. All of the people are equal in Utopia, and the laws are all fair.
Utopia is not a new place. Plato, the ancient Greek philosopher, described a perfect society in his famous dialogue The Republic. In Plato‟s Republic, philosophers were the kings, and every person had a place in the society. In 1516, Sir Thomas More wrote about an island in the Pacific Ocean where everything was perfect. He named the island
“ Utopia”. In 1602, Tommaso Campanella wrote The City in the Sun about a perfect community on the island of Ceylon ( now Sri Lanka ) ; and in 1872, Samuel Butler wrote a novel about a perfect country which he named “ Erewhon”. “ Utopia” is a Greek word that means “ not a place”, and “ Erewhon” is the English word “ nowhere” spelled backwards.
Utopia is a perfect place, but it is not a real place. Most „real‟ Utopias last only a short time. This is because everyone wants to live in it, but no one knows how to make it work. As a result, when we say something is „ Utopia‟ today, we mean that it is a good idea, but it is not realistic.

Generally speaking, most plants are green. The green matter in plants is given a scientific name: chlorophyll. When the sun shines upon plants, chlorophyll will produce some kind of special sugar-based substances that keep the plants alive.
It has long been known that when exposed to sunlight under suitable conditions of temperature and moisture(湿度), the green parts of plants absorb carbon dioxide(CO2)from the atmosphere and release oxygen to it in return. These exchanges are just the opposite of those which take place in human and animal‟s respiration(呼吸). The course in which plants take in carbon dioxide(CO2)and release oxygen(O)is called photosynthesis. In photosynthesis, carbohydrates(碳水化合物)are formed from carbon dioxide(CO2)and water(H2O)by the green matter(chlorophyll)of plant cells in the presence of sunlight. Oxygen is the product of this chemical reaction. For each molecule(分子)of

carbon dioxide(CO2)used, one molecule of oxygen is produced. Therefore, such a chemical equation(反应式)for photosynthesis can be summed up as the following:

Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it’s painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle. During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you’re \"hot\". That's true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the morning. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues as “Get up, John! You’ll be late for work again!” The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy-peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles each member of the family has.
You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but you must stay up late anyway. Counteract your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won't change your cycle, but you'll get up steam and work better at your low point.
Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the trouble of searching for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. When ever
10
possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for your sharp hours. 68. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Change Your Habits B. Save Your Energy C. Daily Energy Cycle
D. Temperature-and-energy Peak
69. If a person finds getting up early a problem, most probably_______.
A. he is a lazy person
B. he refuses to follow his own energy cycle C. lie is not sure when his energy is low
D. he is at his peak in the afternoon or evening
70. Which of the following may lead to family quarrels according to the passage?
A. Unawareness of energy cycles B. Familiar monologues.
C. A change in a family member's energy cycle.
D. Attempts to control the energy cycle of other family members.
71. If one wants to work more efficiently at his low point in the
morning, he Should____________.
A. change his energy cycle B. overcome his laziness C. get up earlier than usual D. go to bed earlier 68—71 DACA

People often say, even without stepping out of my house I know all that has been happening in the world. I think that is quite true, especially in modern times.
We get all kinds of news from newspaper and TV and the Internet. This helps us to understand the developing world, without having to go to the places where events are really taking place.

Thank you for your letter and the photo of your family. Now I

am writing to tell you why I am the only child in my family.
As you know, the population of China is growing very fast. In order to control the rapid increase of population, in the 1980s the government of China began to put into practice the family program -- one child for each couple. As a result, most families have only one child.
Most people are in favor of the program because the child in the family can get more love from the family and chances are better for the child to get better education. The only child is selfish, and not so independent, though. Sometimes they feel lonely. I think, every the only child like me should learn to make more friends. Hope that we write more often. Best wishes.
Yours
