One way to make an egg stand up is to break the thick end. This is an old way to fool others and Columbus once used that. Another way is to shake a fresh egg and hold it upright a few minutes so the yellow part of the egg will come down to the bottom. The yellow part of the egg is heavier than the white and will make the egg heavier at the bottom. You should be able to make it stand on its end (顶端) if you d everything right. The third way is to place a little salt on a piece of white cloth before the test (试验).The egg will stand in the salt, and your friends may think you are clever if they do not see the salt.

Fresh eggs will go down in water. If you find that an uncooked (生的)egg sits on water, you will know that it is made a long time ago, and has become bad. A fresh egg will not go down in salt water. Put in your fresh egg and watch it.

A magic can be played with a fresh egg, some salt and a glass full of water. First you fill the glass with some water, then put in two spoons of salt and move the spoon round and round until the salt is gone. Next you softly fill fresh water in the glass. Please fill the water against the side of the glass so it will mix very little with salt water. It will not fall to the bottom because the salt is heavy, and it will not rise to the top through the fresh water, either. Your egg will stay in a place at the centre of the glass.

( ) 40 If you stand an egg n its end, it will ________

A fall down B stand upright C fly D be broken

( )41 If you shake a fresh egg long enough, the yellow part of the egg will __________ A become heavier B come to the bottom C come out D become light ( )43 Which is the best title for the passage? A What are eggs? B A magic about eggs

C Tests on eggs

D The difference between fresh eggs and bad eggs C

The second one: noise. Enjoy yourselves by all means, but please don‘t make unnecessary noise, especially at night. We ask you to respect other people who may wish to be quiet.

I knocked into a man as he passed by. ―Oh, excuse me, please.‖ I said. He replied, ―Please excuse me, too. I didn‘t notice where I was going.‖

Later that day, while I was cooking, my son stood behind me quietly. When I turned around, I nearly knocked him down. ―Move out of the way,‖ I shouted. He walked away with his little heart broken.

That night while I was lying in bed, a voice came to me, ―When saying to that man, you used good manners. But to the child you love, you seemed to act in a bad way. Look at the kitchen floor, and you‘ll find some flowers there by the door. Those are the flowers your son brought for you. He picked them himself. He stood quietly to give you a surprise and you never saw the tears in his eyes.‖

By this time, tears began to run down my face. I took the flowers and went to his bed. I asked him, ―Are these the flowers you picked for me?‖

He smiled. ―I found them by the tree. I picked them because they‘re pretty like you. I know you‘d like them.‖

―Son, I‘m sorry for the way I acted today. I shouldn‘t have shouted at you that way.‖ ―Oh, Mom, that‘s OK. I love you anyway.‖

―Son, I love you, too. And I do like the flowers.‖

If we die tomorrow, the family we leave behind will feel sad for the rest of their life. Why don‘t we spend more time with our family, and why aren‘t we nice to them?

A lot of books for learning English discuss problems of the modern world: pollution, too much traffic. Venice (威尼斯) has some of these problems. But the city has its own problems. For example, there are no cars in Venice, and very few people can dive. The traffic problem is caused by the boats. They go too fast and make the water damage the buildings.

Every year, between April and September, the water covers a lot of places of the city. It goes into all the shops which are on the ground floor. And, of course, into people‘s houses. In November 1979, the water rose more than a meter above the normal (正常的) level. This happened every year for a whole week. On some days, it happened twice.

People in Venice usually wear rubber boots (胶鞋) In some places, there are high platforms(平台) to walk along. Sometimes offices have to close because the water can damage computers and machines. And, of course, it is terrible for old people.

Other problems in Venice are caused by too many tourists in summer. They move in large groups, and boats usually get very crowded. Prices in the hotels and restaurants are often high.

However, people still think Venice is a good place to live in because it is a human city. 60 Why can very few people in Venice drive?
