It’s a school holiday today. It’s warm and the sun is shining. It’s the perfect day for an outing. Zack, Vera, Kelly and Tim are discussing what they are going to do. Let’s listen and see what happens…
Zack: Hey you guys, it would be a shame to stay inside on a day like this. How about taking the bus to Stanley and going to the beach?
Tim: [excitedly] That sounds great.
Kelly: I'm in! But can we go to the mall first so I can get some suntan oil? Zack: [hesitantly (犹豫地)] Well, Kelly, I suppose we've got time...
Vera: And we can stop off in Tsim Sha Tsui and get something to eat first. I'm sorry, but I don't think I'll be able to get anything good once we get there.
Zack: I don't know, Vera — it's already eleven o'clock..
Tim: Actually, why don't we have a look at Stanley Market before we go to the beach? The bus stops right in front of the market. I want to look for some casual shirts and trousers.
Kelly: Oh, yes, Tim, let’s do that. Maybe they have some trendy swim suits, and some jewellery…
Zack: [to himself] This is really awful! [to the others] Look, I don’t want to go to a restaurant or go shopping — I just want to go to the beach on a nice day. You all said you'd go with me, but if you don't want to, you don't have to. See you later.
[sound of a door opening and closing] Vera: Somebody's not glad! Tim: Well, it was his idea to go out, after all. Kelly: Oh, dear, poor Zack. I'm going to call him.
[on the telephone] Hi, Zack? Look, just wait at the bus stop for me. I'm coming now. I won’t go to the mall. Tim: Tell him I'm coming too. We don't need to stop at the market.
Vera: [sighs (吸气)] Oh, all right. I can risk having lunch at the beach, I guess.
Kelly: [on the telephone] Zack? We're all coming now. We should all enjoy this great day together. [to the rest] OK, let's go. We shouldn't keep Zack waiting. Tim: [hurriedly] OK, come on, everybody… [fade] 26.Vera thinks that ______.

It was a morning in January. The jet stream(急流)had dipped down, causing the Arctic cold to reach the mountains of my home. It was only 2 degrees outside, but the cold wind made it feel like it was 15 below zero. Still, I was kneeling in the snow alongside my house trying to open a tiny door, so I could get in. I had forgotten to leave my water drippingthe night before and now my water pipes were frozen and my faucetswere dry.
The wind cut into me like a knife while I struggled to get two electric heaters in place around the section of frozen pipes. The waterlines were buried except for a small piece that connected up to my house. I put a heater on each side of it, ran the extension cords(软线)into my house and plugged them in. Both heaters roared to life and started blowing hot air on the frozen water pipes. My fingers had already started to go numb, so I stayed inside to wait. I could only hope that this bit of warmth could get my water flowing again. Finally, after twenty minutes, the water started flowing through my faucets again. I went back outside into the biller cold and gathered my heaters up. I looked at the weak January sun shining on the frozen snow and smiled. Then I sent a joy filled with \"Thank you\" heavenward and returned inside to make myself a hot breakfast.
Sometimes the coldness of this life can get to us as well. It can make our hearts feel icy and frozen. It can keep our kindness and love from flowing out to others. Sometimes, though, all we need is a bit of warmth to get us going again. It can be a simple smile, a kind word, a heart-felt hug, a morning sunrise, a bird's song or any gentle reminder of just how much God loves us. Let us all be grateful for those bits of warmth that gel us going again. And let us all try to be that bit of warmth for others every chance we get. 29.What was the direct reason why the water pipes were frozen?______ A.The jet stream C.The cold wind.
B.The low temperature. D.The author's own carelessness.
30.Which of the following can replace the underlined phrase “roared to life” in Paragraph 2?______
A.Began functioning smoothly. C.Broke down suddenly.
B.Worked inappropriately. D.Screamed out loudly.
31.What did the author think of his work?______ A.Embarrassed. C.Mad with joy
B.Satisfied. D.Disappointed
32.What is the last paragraph mainly centered on?______ A.The coldness of life has a negative effect on our life quality. B.We meet with the coldness of life unavoidably and unwillingly. C.We should be thankful for bits of warmth of life.
D.We should seize every chance to receive warmth of life from others. 【
the night before and 根据第一段中的信息“I had forgotten to leave my water dripping(滴水)now my water pipes were frozen and my faucets(水龙头)were dry. ”可知,头天晚上我忘记了让水龙头的水一直处于滴水的状态,现在水管冻结了,水龙头也流不出水了。由此可知,导致水管冻结的直接原因是由于作者本人的疏忽。故选D。
30.A词句猜测题。根据该画线短语所在句子中的信息“and started blowing hot air on the frozen water pipe…after twenty minutes, the water started flowing through my faucets again”可知,两个加热器开始向冻结的水管吹热空气,……
根据第二段最后两句“I looked at the weak January sun shining on the frozen snow and smiled. Then I sent a joy filled with \"Thank you\" heavenward and returned inside to make myself a hot breakfast.”
根据最后一段最后两句“Let us all be grateful for those bits of warmth that gel us going again. And let us all try to be that bit of warmth for others every chance we get.”

Language students often think they have memory problems. They worry because they can't remember words. In fact, the problem usually isn't with their memory. The problem is with how they study.
To remember words better, you need to understand how memory works. There are two kinds of memory: short-term and long-term. When you see, hear, or read something, it goes first into short-term memory. But short-term memory lasts for only a few seconds. You will only remember something longer if it goes into long-term memory. Your long-term memory is like a very big library with many, many books. And like a library, it's organized. When you put away a book or memory you can't just leave it anywhere. You have to choose a place where you can find it again. How can you do this with vocabulary? The answer is to work with the word and think about the word in new ways. You can do this by writing new sentences that include it. Even better, you can invent a little story about the word, with people or places that you know. Another way is to make a picture in your mind with the word. For example, if the word is height, you can think of the tallest person you know and try to guess his or her height. All of these activities are good ways to think about words. They make the meaning of words stronger in your long-term memory. And they give a way to find a word when you need it.
33.In the writer's opinion, students can't remember words because ______. A.they have memory problems C.they don't use a proper way

B.What we see goes into long-term memory first.
C.We will forget a word soon if it goes into short-term memory. D.We will never forget a word if it goes into long-term memory.
35.The underlined(划线的)part in Paragraph 2 means long-tern memory ______. A.works like a well-organized library B.provides any book you want C.leaves memory anywhere
D.keeps many books like a large library 36.This passage mainly tells us about ______.
A.students' language problems in study B.how to make the meaning of words stronger C.short-term and long-term memory D.how to improve ways to remember words 【分析】

When Shanghai introduced a new rubbish sorting policy (政策) in July last year, the people in this city took some time to get used to it. They joked that every time they took out their litter, the aunt standing by the bins would ask, \"What kind of litter are you?\"
Starting on May 1, Beijing joined many Chinese cities by introducing a new rubbish sorting policy. People should sort their litter into four groups: kitchen, recyclable, harmful and other waste. These groups are represented (代表) by four different colors of rubbish bins-green, blue, red and gray. Those who fail to sort their litter correctly may face fines of up to 200 yuan.
The way Beijing sorts its rubbish sounds different from cities like Shanghai and Qingdao. These cities use four different groups: wet, recyclable, harmful and dry. Although their names are different, the groups are actually the same. Wet rubbish in Shanghai is, in fact, kitchen rubbish. And dry rubbish is the same as other waste.
Many people don't know how to sort their litter correctly, so Beijing government is offering online guidelines. If people don't know how to throw away rubbish, they can search for it on the WeChat account Guanchenglishi (管城理市) to find out. By searching a key word or taking a photo, people can find out which group their waste belongs to at once.

38.What will happen if people don't follow the rubbish sorting policy?______ A.They will be made to learn the policy. C.They won't be noticed.

A.the government's advice about rubbish sorting policy B.problems with Beijings rubbish sorting policy C.how Beijing government help people sort their rubbish D.actions we can take to protect the environment 40.What can we infer (推断) from the passage?______ A.People are made to sort their litter and they are unhappy.
