upon graduation, virtually all college students will confront the problem of the career choice. It is truly a tough choice. Students’ opinions differ greatly on this issue. Some hold that priority should be given to their interest in jobs, but others take the attitude that salary is the most critical factor influencing their career choices.

As to myself, I prefer the latter view. A well-paid job exerts a tremendous fascination on a great number of people, with no exception to me. Although it might be impossible to measure the value of one’s job in terms of money, salary counts most when I choose my future career. In my view, our career choices largely depend on how and where we have been brought up. I came from a poor urban family and my parents were both laid-off workers. In order to finance my tuition, they have been working hard over the past four years. As the only son in my family, I have to shoulder the burden of supporting my family. In short, salary is the first and only consideration in my choice of career.

A letter to the editor

Dear editor,

I have been following with great interest the discussion inspired by the article “do we need blog?” published in your newspaper of June 3rd. I’d like to voice my opinion about this issue.

As stated in the article, the blogosphere in china is experiencing

unprecedented blog-to-blog arguments. Quite a number of bloggers become trapped in the difficulties striking a balance between what they want to and writing what may be too offensive to those who have access to their space.

Then, to blog or not to blog? This a question for many people. However, no one would deny the fact that blog is definitely a useful means of free expression online. It has found an immediate welcome and enjoyed much popularity ever since its birth in that never before have ordinary people been allowed such vigorous and unrestrained debate on certain issues. Therefore, to put an end to blogs may not be a way out.

What might be pointed out is that bloggers should have an awareness that online insults are as unforgivable as those in real life. So it is necessary that bloggers discipline themselves. Apart from people’s self-disciplines, lawmakers are called on to establish laws to police online activities. Only in this way can we have a clean blogosphere and enjoy freedom of speech.

Certificate craze on campus

In recent years, getting a certificate has become a new craze among colleges. Just randomly ask a student on campus what he or she is busy doing; quite possibly, you may get the answer that he or he is busy preparing for a certificate of some kind. Why does this craze appear?

There are mainly two reasons behind this phenomenon. First, it is the

employment pressure that forces college students to get more certificates. With the admission expansion of colleges, a lot more graduates have to face the fierce competition in the job market. How can one make himself more competitive? More certificates at hand, maybe. Second, ddiploma and certificates are still important standards by which many employers measure a person’s ability. In order to increase the qualifications for a job, the students compel themselves to run from one exam to another.

From my point of view, we should be more rational when it comes to certifcates, since certificates do not necessarily prove one’s ability. Being crazy in getting certifications blindly is nothing but wasting time. To conclude, we should focus on improving our ability but not getting a certificate of no practical value.

Should teenagers be encouraged to attend TV shows?

In the past to years, various TV shows have given magic birth to some idols of the young in china, among who last year’s “super girls” are unlikely to be neglected. It is no exaggeration that their overnight success has become the talk of the whole society. Numerous teenagers are enthusiastically following their examples by attending TV singing contests.

This trend gives rise to much discussion. It is assumed by some people that such TV shows make it possible for the common people to become superstars, which is otherwise an extremely tough task. However, others frown on young students’ participation in these programs. It is held that the primary concern of

adolescents should be school activities rather than social activities. Besides, such TV shows lead some teenagers to be under the illusion that there is a shortcut to success and be unwilling to work hard, which will exert a bad influence on the society.

In my view, it is absolutely unadvisable for teenagers to appear on the TV shows, wearing grown-up clothes and grown-up expressions. They should put study above anything else because adolescence is a crucial age for their education. What really matters in one’s life is not short-lived early success but real competency.

On plastic surgery

Does plastic surgery change your personal social values? It has been argued by popular cry since the technology came off. Those who rushed into plastic surgery deem it as a best way to stand out form the crowd, boosting their chances of academic and career success. For some young people’s part, just as it is normal for a lady to have make-up, it is an acceptable life style to attain attractive appearance under the knife.

However, some feel it ill-advised for those obsessed with desirable looks to turn to plastic surgeons. A world with similar faces is far from colorful. What’s more, true beauty consists in competence and confidence which will not fade away.

As for me, leaping into a plastic surgery clinic is the last thing I will do. It is one’s sincerity and capability that win him popularity and opportunity. In addition, plastic surgery can be dangerous and tricky. A good case in point is the household pop singer Michael Jackson. The over-enthusiastic beauty-hunter has spent a handsome sum of money only to find himself trapped in endless medical treatments to keep fit after dozens of plastic surgeries.

Should university students rent houses off the campus?

Recent years have witnessed an increasing trend in university students’ renting houses off campus. It is no surprise that an army of college students move into the neighborhood housing around university campus.

The idea of living off the campus finds an echo among the students who believe it gives more freedom to them. As is natural, as far as school dormitories are concerned, students are confined to a small living circle. What’s more, student dormitories are hardly furnished with modern facilities such as TV sets and washrooms, which is simply inconvenient for the students.

Not everyone share this feeling. Those who view the phenomenon the other way round maintain that this practice may result in the chaos of the universities’ disciplining their students, who are still in their passage into maturity. In addition, it may also add extra financial burden to their families.

As for me, I choose living off campus over staying on campus not only

because it provides more freedom and allows more privacy, but because it helps present the world outside the ivory tower to the students.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write an essay entitled Creating a Green Campus. You should write at least 120 words following the outline below in Chinese:

1. 建设绿色校园很重要

2. 绿色校园不仅指绿色的环境……

3. 为了建设绿色校园,我们应该……

Creating a Green Campus

Recently a debate about “Green Campus” has aroused public attention. Undoubtedly, everyone knows that a green campus has a profound impact on both individuals and society, but what does the real “Green Campus” refer to? And how could we devote ourselves to the construction?

Needless to say, a green campus includes not only the places where the students live, but also the mental environment. The preservation and protection for the environment, such as planting more trees and flowers and using degradable plastic containers, is needed for campus construction. Meanwhile, we should make efforts to improve the moral standard of university students in order

to create a civilized atmosphere for the sake of students' mental health.

As a college student, I get several practical measures to present. In the first place, it is essential that law and regulations be worked out by the authorities. Furthermore, it is high time for us to increase the awareness of the importance of creating a green campus. At last, we must take prompt actions to carry out the regulations. I believe after we doing these, we’ll get a more harmonious and green campus.(188 words)

Due Attention Should Be Given to Spelling

1.如今不少学生在英语学习中不重视拼写

2.出现这种情况的原因

3.针对这样现象,我的观点

What is hot for 2010 in our colleges? It is the spelling mistakes. Countless students lack due attention to spelling. Taking a look around, we can find examples too numerous to list, the one may be “challenge”. Freshman and sophomore almost write this word as “chanllege”. How careless they are!

Why such a phenomenon sweeps every university? Some experts attribute it to students’ inattention, because students always pay no attention to spelling. However, other experts argue, the teachers should be blamed for this situation. In

my opinion, it is far beyond any reasonable doubt that both of them should exert themselves to change the spelling mistakes.

Confronting with this situation, I maintain that the spreading of the spelling mistakes has extremely negative effects on the education. For one thing, the special age that none of students can spell correctly will come soon. For another, while communicating with foreigners, we will be laughed at the spelling mistakes made by ourselves. As a result, due attention should be given to spelling immediately.

Limiting the Use of Disposable Plastic Bags

一次性塑料袋的问题

1、一次性塑料袋曾经广泛使用

2、由此带来的问题

3、限制一次性塑料袋的意义

In our daily life, most people use disposable plastic bags for shopping and other purposes. However, the excessive use of disposable plastic bags has resulted in a great damage to our environment.

The problems brought by disposable plastic bags are various, ranging from environment to people's health. In the first place, it takes years for the plastic

products to decompose and be absorbed by the soil. Secondly, the use of disposable plastic bags will indirectly do harm to people's health. Sometimes people buy hot food packed into disposable plastic bags for saving time to wash their dining utensils. Yet they are not informed of the chemical material the bags release in high temperature. Therefore, they are also eating the poisonous stuff while enjoying the tasty food.

It's enlightening and significant that our government has banned the use of disposable plastic bags officially, and people will be charged for the use of such bags. This action is reducing the consumption of bags to a great extent. It is a great measure for the sustainable development of our earth.
