阅读下列短文,从每题所给出的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

What would you do if you find out your best friend cheated in a maths exam? Here are a few choices:

l Tell him you know and will keep it a secret. l Tell him it’s not right and ask him not to do it again. l Learn from him.

What you do matters. It says something about your character. Character is the way you see things and how you deal with them. Every choice you make helps show the kind of person you are choosing to be. Having a good character means you do the RIGHT thing.

Take the exam cheat for example. If you tell your friend it’s not right to cheat in exams and ask him to stop doing that, you become an honest and responsible (负责任的) kid. Sometimes you may make your friend unhappy, but your honesty and responsibility will tell you to do the RIGHT thing.

Your character isn’t something you’re born with. Good character is something you can work on. When you choose to help your deskmate with his study, you are showing consideration (体谅). When you choose to work together with your teammates in a play, you’re showing cooperation (合作).

When you’re not afraid of school bullies (以强凌弱者) and ask your teacher for help, you’re showing courage.

Learn to make wise choices and do the right thing now! Every small step you take will help you become a better person.

Go to church, then have a big lunch, then go out to play while mum does the housework. That was a typical (典型的) British Sunday in the 1960s. But things now could not be more different. Some British sociologists recently studied the typical British Sunday. They found that people get up later and do less housework than they did 40 years ago. They are far more likely to be out shopping or enjoying themselves than cooking Sunday lunch.

Sunday mornings were busy 40 years ago. Most women caught up on their weekly housework and cooked a nice lunch. They seldom allowed themselves any “leisure” until afternoon, after the dishes were cleaned. Then there would be another rush to the table between 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm for tea.

But now, Britons can have brunch at the restaurant. Fewer people bother to cook themselves. “You only have two free days a week. You don’t want to have to waste one because there is nothing to do but watch boring TV,” said Elizabeth Biggs, 25, a producer in London.

“On Saturday you are recovering from the week,” Biggs added. “Sundays are the last chance for the weekend — you want to get as much as you can out of the day before you have to go back to work.”

In the past, British women usually did their shopping during the week, while the husband was at work. “Now men seem to do that as much as women,” said Jonathan Gershuny, a professor who took part in the study.

Men also do more housework now on Sundays. Back in the 1960s, men were far more likely to spend Sundays out of the house — at the pub or playing football — before lunch. ( )60. Sit into the driver’s seat. Tie up the seat belt. Shift into first gear and put your foot on the accelerator. Push down the handbrake (手闸) …

This is “driving simulation”, an elective course (选修课) at the High School Affiliated (附属) to Renmin University. The students sit in car simulators and follow instructions on how to drive that flash up on a big screen.

“Wonderful!” said Zhao Zhengyang excitedly. “We are so lucky to have the chance to learn driving skills at school.”

“As I have never driven a car on my own before, I’m very curious,” smiled Sha Xiaoli, a 16-year-old Senior 2 girl. “I can’t help touching every part of the car. I turn on the lights and move the steering wheel like I am really on the road.”

However, most students look beyond the simulator to the day when they can drive a car for real. “I once tried a real car,” said Sun Luyin, who completed the course last term. “Although it was different to the simulator, what I had learned in the class was really useful.”

Like most of his classmates, Sun’s final goal is a driving license and the school is happy to guide him to it. “When Senior 3 students graduate from high school, I will take them to a driving school for more thorough learning,” explained teacher Han Haiyan. “They can skip the course on traffic rules and basic skills which they have already mastered, and start learning how to deal with road conditions.

“Cars play a more and more important role in our lives,” he added. “One day maybe all schools will have a course like this!”

What’s in that drink?

The weather is getting hotter and you’ll be getting thirstier playing basketball or riding home from school. A cold drink may be just the thing. But be careful what you pour down your throat. Something that looks cool may not be good for your health.

There are plenty of so-called energy (能量) drinks on the market. Most of them have an attractive colour and cool name. Their nutrition (营养) lists also contains various things from vitamins to ginseng (人参). Sounds great!

But after a careful check you may find that most energy drinks contain high levels of caffeine (咖啡因). These drinks are typically aimed at young people, students, busy people and sports players.

Makers sometimes say their drinks make you better at sports and can keep you awake. But be careful not to drink too much

Caffeine raises your heartbeat. Because of this, the International Olympic Committee has limited their use. The amount (数量) of caffeine in most energy drinks is at least as high as in a strong cup of coffee or strong tea.

There are potential (潜在的) health dangers linked to energy drinks. Just one can of energy drink can make you nervous, have difficulty sleeping and can even cause heart attacks. Teenagers should be discouraged from taking drinks with a lot of caffeine in them, an expert from the Australia Nutrition Foundation said.
