What Job is Right for Me?
Hi there! My name is Jamie and I'm 10 years old. I've been thinking a lot lately about what I want to be when I grow up. There are so many different jobs out there, it's hard to choose! But I have some ideas about what might be a good fit for me based on the things I like to do and the kind of person I am. I really enjoy working with my hands and building things. One of my favorite activities is constructing cool gadgets and contraptions out of stuff like Legos, K'nex, craft supplies, or whatever I can find lying around the house. I'll spend hours putting together these crazy inventions, taking them apart, and then rebuilding them in new ways. My parents are always amazed at the complex things I can make just using my imagination and some random materials. I have a knack for figuring out how to assemble different components to create something functional and useful (or at least entertaining!). Because of my love for hands-on building and design, I think I might make a great architect or engineer someday. Architects get to plan and design buildings, homes, and other structures. How awesome would it be to create awesome skyscrapers or
modern houses with my very own designs? Engineers figure out how to build and construct machines, electronics, roads, bridges and so much more. I could be the person coming up with creative solutions to problems and improving things that impact people's lives every day. Plus, as an architect or engineer I'd get to use math, which is one of my stronger subjects in school. The challenge of planning and drawing up blueprints, doing calculations, and figuring out how to make things work really appeals to me.
Another option that might be a perfect job for me is working as a carpenter, contractor or in construction. I get such a thrill out of hammering pieces of wood together to build forts, treehouses, and other fun projects. Can you imagine how exciting it would be to construct an entire house or building from the ground up? I'm naturally curious about how things are put together, so being around power tools, heavy equipment, and getting to see the step-by-step process of erecting structures would be amazing. Plus, as a builder I'd get to be outdoors a lot instead of stuck inside an office all day. That lifestyle of working with my hands while getting plenty of fresh air and exercise is very appealing.
Maybe I could combine my hobbies of constructing and inventing with computers by becoming a video game designer. I've taught myself some basic coding and I'm constantly coming up with wild ideas for new games with fresh concepts, storylines, characters, and features. It would be a dream job to take those imaginative ideas and turn them into actual interactive digital games that people around the world could play and enjoy. As a game designer, I could work as part of a creative team building those vast, immersive virtual worlds from the ground up. And I'd get paid to be creative and have fun all day - how cool is that? No matter which path I choose, I know I'll gravitate towards a hands-on career that allows me to work with my mind and body. Sitting at a desk all day sounds boring to me. I need to be up and moving, tinkering and building with my hands while also using my brain to solve problems. A job where I get to be inventive and make new things would be the perfect fit for the way I'm wired. Maybe I'll end up as an architect sketching city skylines, an engineer designing rocket ships, a construction foreman coordinating crane operators, or a video game visionary crafting the next big blockbuster game. Heck, I might even try out all of those different careers over my lifetime! The future is wide open for someone like me who loves creating, building and using my hands combined with logic and imagination. I can't
wait to see what amazing things I get to build and bring to life when I grow up.
